The Red Room at Printemps New York Is a True NYC Treasure

The Red Room at Printemps New York Is a True NYC Treasure

If you’re looking for a truly unique New York experience, you’ll want to stop by Printemps, a new French luxury retail store located at One Wall Street. The word “store” hardly feels appropriate, considering it contains cocktail bars, a spa, an atelier, and a storied art deco landmark, all under one roof.

Along with landmarks like the Charging Bull statue and the 9/11 Memorial, the Red Room at Printemps is one of the must-see spots in NYC’s Financial District. It’s not only beautiful, but it’s an important piece of New York’s financial and artistic history.

The history of the Red Room

Close-Up of Red Room Tiles

The Red Room is nothing short of jaw-dropping. The visually stunning room is covered in red, orange, and gold tiles from floor to the ceilings towering 33 feet above.

At eye level, the tiles are a deep burgundy color that gradually transitions to a bright, fiery red as the design reaches the ceiling. Streaks of gold tile are woven throughout the design, lending the room a luminous feel. Each tile was pre-fabricated in Germany and individually stamped so that the installers — the Ravenna Mosaic Company — could assemble it in the intended design.

Fun fact: The Red Room was designed by famed muralist Hildreth Meière, whose work can also be seen at Radio City Music Hall and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.

Irving Trust Bank, which occupied the building at the time, commissioned Meière and architect Ralph Walker to design an attractive reception area for clients. They completed the project in 1931, and it continued to house Irving Trust Bank until the company put the building up for auction in 1988.

The space had been closed to the public since 2001. Ahead of Printemps taking over the space, a serendipitous discovery was made: Several thousand of the original tiles were found in the building’s basement. These tiles were used to restore the Red Room before Printemps’ grand opening in March 2025.

Today, anyone can step inside this piece of New York City’s history. It’s currently being used to house Printemps’ high-end shoe collection.

What to see and do at the new NYC Printemps

Printemps isn’t your typical department store. (In fact, the brand would rather you not call it a department store, according to the CEO). Yes, there’s plenty of shopping to do, but there’s a lot more to explore here.

Book a facial at the spa

Printemps has an onsite spa specializing in facials. You can choose between the Signature Facial, the Radiance Facial, or the Energizing Men’s Facial, all of which are designed to be 45 minute treatments. Each treatment is fully customized to incorporate the products you want to use, and you get to keep the products afterwards. Because of this customization, the price varies.

Slots fill up quickly, so it’s best to book in advance. When I called Printemps recently to get details about the treatments, the client services representative said the best way to make an appointment is by calling Printemps at 212-217-2299.

Get a piece tailored by a renowned designer and patternmaker

If you’ve got a vintage piece that needs some love or a dress you’d wear if only it fit better, you should book an appointment here.

TheTEN Atelier at Printemps offers tailoring, repairs, and even enhancements like embroidery and applique. Angelique Julien, founder of theTEN and renowned designer and patternmaker offers complimentary 45-minute consultations to help breathe new life into the clothes you already own. You can book your appointment online and view prices for different services.

Splurge on something nice

In the mood for a new signature scent or a pair of stylish sneakers? Though Printemps looks and feels like a museum — and you can be happy browsing for an hour or two — it’s a great place for a shopping splurge.

In addition to brand new items, they also have a selection of vintage clothing for men and women. I highly recommend checking out the Beauty Corridor, which has plenty of French skincare and fragrance products you can’t find anywhere else in the U.S.

Here are some examples of the brands featured at Printemps New York:

  • Balmain
  • Christian Louboutin
  • GUERLAIN
  • Jean Paul Gaultier
  • Jimmy Choo
  • La Roche Posay
  • Maison Margiela
  • Manolo Blahnik
  • Nike
  • Saison 1865
  • Tom Ford

Printemps is a true feast for the eyes, with sculptural displays, colorful wallpaper, unique lighting fixtures, and plush couches everywhere.

I recommend walking slowly through the entire store to take it all in, snapping pictures along the way. Your Instagram followers are sure to be dazzled.

Where to eat at Printemps

Cafe Vert in NYC

All that shopping and photo-snapping work up an appetite? Along with the spa and atelier, Printemps also has four onsite bars and restaurants.

Cafe Jalu

Named for founders Augustine and Jules Jaluzot, Cafe Jalu is located on the ground floor of the store. This casual cafe serves coffee, tea, and decadent pastries, so it’s a great place to grab a quick snack and simply relax.

The cafe is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Red Room Bar

Immediately adjacent to the Red Room is this atmospheric cocktail bar with a golden chandelier and plenty of plush velvet seating.

You can order a creative cocktail like the Pink Pony Club, made with mezcal, guava, and strawberry, or the Sticky Rice Swizzle, a zero-proof cocktail made with pineapple and banana.

The Red Room Bar also serves wine by the glass, beer, cider, and elevated bar snacks like pommes frites and shrimp cocktail. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Salon Vert

This charming bistro located on the second floor of the store enjoys plenty of natural light, making it a perfect lunch spot.

The culinary focus at Salon Vert is seafood, so I’d recommend an order of the oysters and crab remoulade with a crisp glass of sauvignon blanc. Salon Vert also serves a curated menu of veggie-forward dishes, cocktails, zero-proof drinks, beer, and wine by the bottle. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Maison Passerelle

This fine-dining spot is ideal for an elevated date night or special occasion.

The decor at Maison Passerelle features beautiful stained glass displays and enormous frescos that you can’t help but stare at. Dishes here included roasted farm chicken, cane syrup-glazed duck, slow-cooked grouper, and smoked beet salad, among other enticing offerings.

Local tip: Leave room for dessert. You’ll want both the caramelized pineapple cake and the Haitian chocolate ganache. It’s only open for dinner, with opening hours from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Know before you go

Here are some quick tips for your visit to Printemps and its soon-to-be-famous Red Room.

How to get to Printemps

Printemps is located at One Wall Street. My recommendation for getting here is to take the subway, which costs $2.90 for a one-way ride. You can pay via credit or debit card, mobile payment app (like Apple Pay), or with a MetroCard that you can purchase in the subway station.

Subway stops close to Printemps include:

  • Wall St. 4 and 5 trains stop here. It’s about 100 feet from the Broadway entrance at Printemps.
  • Rector St. R and W trains stop here. It’s about a 2-minute walk from the Broadway entrance at Printemps.
  • Rector St. The 1 train stops here. It’s a different station than the R/W Rector St. stop, but it’s only a block away. It’s about a 3-minute walk from the Broadway entrance at Printemps.
  • Broad St. The J and Z trains stop here. It’s about a 2-minute walk from here to the Broadway entrance at Printemps.

There are two entrances to the store. The main entrance is on Broadway, just north of Exchange Place. The other entrance, which takes you directly into the Red Room, is around the corner on Wall Street just off of Broadway. If you’re taking a taxi or rideshare, you can set your destination as 1 Wall St. or 60 Broadway.

If you’re driving, I’d recommend finding a paid lot or garage to park in, as street parking is quite limited in the area. The LAZ Battery Parking Garage is located nearby at 70 Greenwich St., about a 4-minute walk from the Broadway entrance at Printemps. You can reserve a spot ahead of time.

Where to find the Red Room

If you enter the store through the Wall Street entrance, you’ll step right into the Red Room. If you enter from the Broadway entrance, you’ll walk through the entire store before you reach the Red Room.

From the Broadway entrance, you’ll want to take the stairs or escalator to the second floor. From there, you’ll walk through the Salon, Beauty Corridor, and Boudoir until you reach another staircase or elevator, which you’ll then take down to the Red Room.

It’s a bit of a strange layout, so don’t be afraid to ask an employee for directions. (That’s ultimately what I ended up doing).

Bonus: Check out this map of the store.

Is the Red Room free?

Yes, it’s completely free to walk through Printemps, including the Red Room.

Is Printemps New York ADA accessible?

Yes, Printemps has a wheelchair-accessible ramp, elevators, and ADA-compliant bathrooms. If you have specific questions about accessibility, call Printemps New York at 212-217-2299 or email them at [email protected] or [email protected]

Visiting Printemps after your Wall Street tour

Luckily, it’s easy to stop into Printemps before or after one of our Wall Street tours. It’s about a 2-minute walk from 22 Broad St., where The Wall Street Insider Tour and Financial Crisis Tour both begin, and a 6-minute walk from the Federal Reserve Bank, where the tours end. So it’s easy to stop by the Red Room at Printemps before or after your tour.
